Adventure games that respect your intelligence

Adventure games that respect your intelligence

There's a specific joy in an adventure puzzle you solve on your own after staring at it for a minute. That joy vanishes the moment a game either holds your hand or hides the answer somewhere unfair.

Good adventure design plants clues in the world. The solution is there if you observe, and the pieces fall into place with a satisfying click. Hollowmere does this well, letting the environment do the teaching.

A gentle hint system is fine, as long as it stays optional. The goal is to help stuck players without robbing everyone else of the discovery.

If you're new to the genre, start with something atmospheric and short. Give yourself permission to sit with a puzzle instead of rushing to a walkthrough, that patience is where the fun lives.
